Gentle readers!

Writing two series of poetry has been wonderful.  It has helped my mental and emotional state more than I can tell.  Having a series in mind – A Plan – gives me something to look forward to.  It helps me see myself as something more than a disabled-housewife-spouse-mom.

As you know, I finished the Haiku of Legendary Creatures last night; the Haiku of the Nations ended about two weeks ago.  You’d think I’d feel a sense of relief, of being able to kick back and relax.  Unfortunately that’s not the case.  I feel uneasy, like I’m floating aimlessly.

“So,” you say, “start a new series!”  Well, I’d like to … but I’m not sure where to start!

At 3:00 this morning I had an idea.  What about writing a series of haiku specifically about emotions?  The following poster popped into my head.  I saw it at my son’s elementary school several years ago.

How DO you feel? (I added the numbers.)

Perhaps I could write haiku based on images from nature – images that represent the various “feeling faces”.  Sure, poetry is supposed to evoke images and emotion.  But instead of working from

Image          to Emotion           to Haiku

I would work from

Emotion          to Image          to Haiku

What do you say?  Do you have any ideas for a new series of haiku?  Do you think my current idea is “great”, “okay”, or “lousy”?  Are there any nature images you would like me to write about?

I would appreciate your feedback!

  1. Seems like a good idea to me…
Or, you could do A – Z your favorite artists/songs/movies…
Or, you could a series on the zodiac…
Or, you could do a series on great comics: calvin & hobbes, dilbert, garfield, heathcliff, citizen dog, blondie, zits, mutts, baby blues…

    • Hmmm….. favorite artists A to Z would really kick butt! I like that.
      .
A zodiac series would be interesting too … could do both “western” (the one we think about, with Capricorn, Sagittarius, etc.) and “eastern” (year of rat, year of dragon, etc.).
      .
Comics would lend themselves more to limericks than haiku, but that is an idea for future series. I don’t know that many comics though. Maybe if you add cartoons it would work (Adventure Time TV, Beetle Bailey np, Calvin & Hobbes np, etc.).
      .
There are some good ideas here. I may ditch the “moods” for the artists. Thank you for the great ideas!

  2. Jen! I think that is a great idea, and it sounds very cathartic. and I know Catharsis in Writing :) I was just thinking of you yesterday. Say a advert for a Beatles cover band coming to my town. march 1. I will be going to see them. I will write about it ;)

    • Wow! Can’t wait to see the news on the Beatles band! Yes, you’ll have to write all about it. :)

I’m having a procedure done on the 1st so I might not reply right away, but I’ll keep an eye out for it.

Did I tell you the card arrived in the mail the other day? I thought it was dear!

    • Thanks!
I think I am going to make an about-face and try a different idea for a bit … doing painters A to Z … but while I’m doing that I’ll research the “emotions” images because that might take a bit more work than I thought it would take. Perhaps I should ask people if they are willing to submit photos they’d like to see featured/ written about? Finding the photos may be 3/4 of the work in this idea …. [shudder]
Thanks for the support – I appreciate it a lot!
      Hope you’re doing well [hugs]

    • Oh, it’s going to be a stretch alright! ;) I have an idea to do the artist haiku first, and work on the moods second since it’s going to take longer because I’ll have to find appropriate artwork. That part has me a bit nervous!
